An International Standard Prepared under the Leadership of Sinosteel LIRR Is Officially Approved for Publication

On July 8, 2020, a piece of news came from the ISO Central Secretariat that the ISO/FDIS 22605 Refractory Materials - Test Method for High-Temperature Modulus of Elasticity (Pulse Excitation Method) prepared under the leadership of China officially passed the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) voting and was approved for publication. This international standard project was developed by Sinosteel Luoyang Institute of Refractories Research Co., Ltd. (“Sinosteel LIRR” for short). The convener was Dr. Li Hongxia, chief engineer of Sinosteel Holdings and Honorary President of Sinosteel LIRR, who worked with a group of members from China, the United States, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Since the project application was submitted to the Standardization Administration of China in January 2017, it’s been nearly four years passing with four stages of the ISO New Project (the NP stage) voting, the Committee Draft (the CD stage) voting, the Draft International Standard (the DIS stage) voting, and the Final Draft International Standard (the FDIS stage) voting. The project won unanimous international recognition and passed the voting for approval successfully.

Young’s modulus is an important property of materials. Although both international and domestic research institutions and interested technical workers are very active in studying the test methods of Young’s modulus under room temperature and high temperature, there is a lack of an internationally accepted method. It is stated in the ISO 12680-1 and ASTM C 1548-02 that the test method for Young’s modulus under room temperature is also applicable to high temperature, but no detailed instructions are provided. The absence of a unified test method is inconvenient to users and instrument manufacturers and is not conducive to technical specifications and development. In China, a standard test method of Young’s modulus is a hot topic of study led by Sinosteel LIRR. On the basis of two national standards for high-temperature Young’s modulus that have been developed, Sinosteel LIRR submitted an application for establishing the international standard project at the right timing and gained approval.

In recent years, the SASAC has encouraged central enterprises to actively participate in the formulation of international industry standards because controlling and competing for the commanding heights in international standardization can help them elevate their core technologies with independent intellectual property rights in advantageous areas to international standards and win greater development space. This international standard project marks another important achievement that Sinosteel LIRR has made after it served as the convener of an international standard project on the test method of refractory materials for the first time in 2016, and it fully demonstrates the leading position of Sinosteel LIRR in the global refractory material industry.
