CPC Members Improving Caliber in Sinosteel

The members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Sinosteel are undergoing an education drive.

The CPC Central Committee's Organization Department conducted a survey of 300,000 members in 2000. It found that most members had played an exemplary role on all fronts, said Li Jingtian, deputy head of the department, but a few had failed to meet the requirements of preserving "the advanced nature" of the Party.

In its constitution, the CPC says it must always represent the requirements of the development of the nation's advanced productive forces, the orientation of the development of China's advanced culture and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people. The campaign is a self-education process for the Party to tackle some noteworthy problems and better serve the public. The combination of regular education with appropriate centralized campaigns is an important part of the Party's experience to ... keep its advanced nature.

"We will educate unqualified Party members in an effort to make them qualified. If they fail to change, the Party will deal with them strictly according to the Party constitution."A rising number of young people and intellectuals are applying to join the Party after witnessing its role in reform and modernization. The official said the CPC has always stressed anti-corruption work, and the current education campaign will help resolve some outstanding problems among its members. He also said some "mass incidents" in rural areas were made worse by the incompetence of a few grass-roots cadres, some of whom probably were less competent and unable to deal properly with the problems.Meanwhile, Guo Weimin, director of the News Department of the State Council Information Office, yesterday said by inviting senior CPC officials to attend press conferences, his office wanted to contribute to increasing transparency in Party affairs.
