Sinosteel and Midwest Signing Koolanooka and Weld Range Projects Feasibility Study Joint Venture Agreement

On Oct. 18, 2005, Sinosteel and Australian Midwest held grand signing ceremony of jointly researching on developing Koolanooka and Weld Range iron ore projects in Perth, Australia.    President Mr. Huang Tianwen and general manager of International Cooperation Dept. Mr. Wang Zhijun signed the joint venture agreement with Midwest chairman Mr. Jesse Taylor and executive director Jynsim Baker.

Attended the signing ceremony are: Mr. Ruan Ping, vice deputy consul-general Chinese Consulate-General in Perth, Mr. Alan Carpenter, minister for state development, energy, Mr. Wang Xuefeng, vice director of Enterprise Bureau, China Development Bank and leaders from Ministry of Commerce, National Development and Reform Commission and China Iron & Steel Association. Sinosteel delegation and staff from Sinosteel Australia Pty. Ltd. also attended the signing ceremony.   

After the signing ceremony, Sinosteel president Mr. Huang Tianwen received interviews from CCTV, Xinhua News Agency and Australian media on the signing of the joint venture agreement between Sinosteel and Midwest. The signing of the joint venture agreement marks a new stage for Chinese enterprises to develop overseas resources, which will bring new contributions to steel industry in China and mining industry in Australia.

Good Morning!

Today I’m so proud to be here to attend the signing ceremony of Studies JV Agreement between Sinosteel and Midwest. For only three months Sinosteel and Midwest finalized the agreement that normally would require much more time to finish. With the same pride, I would like to point out three major features of this project in the agreement:

* It will be the first magnetite exploration undertaking with Chinese investment in Australian mining history;

* It will be the first project that a Chinese company participates at the initial feasibility study stage; and

* It will also be the first mining project in Australia that associated infrastructure has been consolidated in an formal agreement with a Chinese company.  

So today's event is very important not only for our two companies but also for Sino-Australian relations. On this significant occasion, I would like to, on behalf of Sinosteel Corporation, extend our sincere thanks to all the guests for your attendance and constant supports to Sinosteel Corporation during the past.
