Iron Ore Mining and Trading

China is in short of iron ore resources, and they are featured with many associated minerals, low grade, difficult to explore and to beneficiate, and high costs, which could not meet the increasing development of demands for iron and steel industry.

Channar Iron Mine Joint Project

Sinosteel signed an agreement with Rio Tinto Group under the support of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry in 1988, and both companies cooperated, invested in and operated Channar iron mine together, and Sinosteel sells 10 million tons of iron ore on China's market every year.This is the first iron ore mining and trading project for Sinostee, and it is also the earliest large-scale foreign resources investment project.    The project has delivered more than 240 million tons of iron ore to China so far.   With the expiration of the cooperation by the end of 2016, Sinosteel and Rio Tinto Group signed the extension agreement of the project under the witness of the leaders of both countries, and Sinosteel intends to log high-quality iron ore resources of 10 million tons/year.   

China-West Australia Iron Mine

There are 320 million tons of hematite resources proved in Chins-West Australia iron mine, with an average grade of Fe 58%, and 690 million tons of magnetite resources, with an average grade of Fe33.2%. Currently, one of the reasons that it could not be mined in a large scale is that the railway port facilities promoted by local government have not been constructed due to the suspension of Mitsubishi. Once the above facilities are completed, the mine would produce 15 million tons of iron ore annually.

Chromium Ore Exploitation, Ferrochrome Production and Trading

The chromium is an important element for steel, in particular for stainless steel, while only about 10 million tons of chromium ore are found in China, which is extremely poor.

Sinosteel's Chromium Resource

Sinosteel began to acquire and establish chromium ore exploitation and ferrochrome production enterprises in South Africa and Zimbabwe in succession from 1996 onwards. Currently, there are three companies, with more than 270 million tons of chrome ore resources under control, which is 26 times of China's reserves; the ferrochrome capacity is 1 million tons, ranking the fourth in the world. Sinosteel plans to cooperate with the existing partner SamancorCr further and creates a world class chromium resource enterprise with the first chromium resource (800 million tons)and the second ferrochrome capacity (1.9 million tons)in the world, which lays a solid foundation for the development of the stainless steel industry in China.

Metallurgical Equipment Manufacture

The continuous casting and rolling equipment and large-scale coke oven protection device, dry quenching equipment and other products also enjoy a high influence in the industry.

The Company produced the first large-scale coke oven protection device of more than 6 meters domestically and the first dry quenching equipment. The Company has occupied the monopoly position in the manufacturing of large-scale blast furnace top, stokehold complete equipment as well as RH molten steel vacuum refining furnace equipment for a long time.
