11 July, 2008 Sinosteel Corporation announced today that it now holds a controlling stake of 50.97% of Midwest. Sinosteel’s offer to Midwest shareholders is scheduled to expire on 18 July, 2008.

This is the first successful hostile takeover of an overseas firm by a Chinese state-owned entity and it is of great significance to future Sino-Australian trade and economic partnership.
